About the event

About this course:

Christi Moon Robbins has been a funeral director and embalmer for 18 years, and has been a Certified Crematory Operator with the high-volume third-party crematory East Tennessee Cremation Company since 2018. She also serves as the Family Cremation Center Coordinator there, as well as overseeing Marketing & Member Relations for The Group.

This course provides critical information and best practices for handling the unique challenges associated with obese cremations. It emphasizes the importance of accurate weight assessment, stressing the dangers of estimation and the necessity of using scales, and discusses combined weight, considering both the individual and the container, and how to determine if the crematory equipment has the capacity and clearance for the cremation. The course stresses the importance of having a backup plan, including knowing who to contact for assistance and understanding the limitations of one's own comfort level. Safe and secure encasement of the body is covered, along with the proper orientation (head end/foot end) for loading. Participants will learn about the importance of temperature management and patience. The course will also cover safe loading techniques, including the use of additional personnel, and specific strategies for handling obese bodies. Continuous monitoring throughout the cremation process is emphasized, including the potential for rapid changes and the value of having manufacturer technical support available. The necessity of repositioning the body during cremation is addressed, as are setting reasonable expectations with the family regarding the process and timeline. This course equips crematory operators with the knowledge and skills to perform obese cremations safely and respectfully.

*This is a POV training/demonstration using a clean, vacuumed cremation unit in real time. There WILL NEVER BE any decedent present in the building for purposes of training as that would be unethical and undignified.
